Quick Start Guide
1Prepare Your Data
Export your product catalog as CSV with the following columns:
sku— Your internal product identifierproduct_name— Product title or descriptionmaterial— Primary material composition (e.g., "cotton", "polyester", "plastic")country_of_origin— Manufacturing country (e.g., "China", "Vietnam")unit_cost— Cost per unit in USD
Optional but helpful:
category— Product category (e.g., "apparel", "electronics")supplier— Supplier name or IDmonthly_volume— Units imported per month
2Upload to Tarifix
Log in to your Tarifix dashboard and navigate to Products → Import. Drag and drop your CSV or click to browse.
Map your CSV columns to Tarifix fields. Our system will auto-detect common column names.
3Review Classifications
Tarifix will automatically classify 70-95% of your products. High-confidence matches (>85%) are approved automatically. Lower-confidence matches go to your review queue.
In the review queue, you'll see:
- Suggested HTS codes with confidence scores
- Similar products from your catalog or CBP rulings
- HTS code descriptions and duty rates
Approve, correct, or flag for expert review.
4View Your Exposure
Navigate to Dashboard → Exposure to see:
- Total monthly/annual tariff costs
- Exposure by origin country
- Exposure by HTS chapter
- High-risk products (>$500/month in duties)
5Model Scenarios
Go to Scenarios → New Scenario to model policy changes:
- "What if China tariffs increase 25%?"
- "What if we shift 40% of sourcing to Vietnam?"
- "What if we qualify for FTZ duty deferral?"
Tarifix calculates the P&L impact and highlights which products are most affected.
Understanding HTS Codes
The Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) is a 10-digit classification system used by U.S. Customs to determine duty rates. For example:
6205.20.2015
│││││ ││ ││││
│││││ ││ ││││
│││││ ││ ││││___ Statistical suffix (U.S. specific)
│││││ ││ │││
│││││ ││ │││____ Subheading detail
│││││ ││ ││
│││││ ││ ││_____ Article/product type
│││││ ││ │
│││││ ││ │______ Material
│││││ ││
│││││ ││________ Heading (specific product)
│││││ │
│││││ │_________ Subheading
││││
││││_____________ Chapter (general category)
││
││_______________ Section (broad category)
Example: 6205.20.2015 = Men's shirts, of cotton, not knit
Classification Tips
Be Specific with Materials
HTS classification is heavily material-dependent. "Shirt" could be classified under dozens of different codes depending on whether it's cotton, polyester, silk, or a blend.
Country of Origin Matters
The same product might have wildly different duty rates depending on where it's manufactured. China often faces higher rates due to Section 301 tariffs.
Review Edge Cases
Multi-material products, sets, and items with multiple uses can be tricky. When Tarifix flags low confidence, it's worth a manual review or expert consultation.
Data Security
Your product catalog is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3). We're SOC 2 Type II certified and never share your data with third parties. You can delete your data at any time from Settings → Data & Privacy.
